Bologna Children’s Book Fair 2026 opens: Norway takes the stage as Guest of Honour!
Finally the moment has arrived! The Bologna Children’s Book Fair 2026 is officially open, and we are beyond excited that Norway is this year’s Guest of Honour.

All across Bologna, Norwegian children’s and young adult literature and illustration are coming to life: in conversations, exhibitions, readings, and encounters. At the heart of it all is our motto “What if”, two small words with endless potential. They invite us to imagine, to question, to dream and to step into new worlds together.

In her opening speech, Norway’s Minister of Culture and Equality, Lubna Jaffery, captured this spirit beautifully. She spoke about how “What if” can be the starting point for great dreams and important questions, highlighting the essential role of creativity, imagination, and curiosity in shaping stories for young readers. She also expressed how grateful Norway is to be part of this year’s fair and to share its literature with the world.

Margit Walsø, Director of NORLA, brought a warm and heartfelt perspective to the opening. She thanked the many illustrators, authors, publishers, and translators who have made this guest of honour project possible. And what a presence it is: 49 illustrators, 20 authors taking part in readings and workshops across the city, and a vibrant Norway Café at the fairground filled with events throughout the week.
She, too, returned to “What if”, reminding us how these two words open doors to entirely new worlds, creating space for imagination, creativity, and exploration.

This is just the beginning, and we can already feel it: this week in Bologna will be full of inspiring moments, new connections, and unforgettable impressions. Come and join us in the What if… universe!
